Homemade Toothpaste

homemade toothpaste

We were running out of toothpaste. You know that point where you use everything but a steamroller to squeeze that last squirt from the tube? This stuff is expensive. Then we started wondering… why? Toothpaste has been around a long time and why do manufacturers keep adding stuff to toothpaste? Could homemade toothpaste be the next thing we simplify, “healthify”, and “costify” in the Perry household?  So we did a search for homemade toothpaste.

If you care about your health and that of your family, then you are really careful about what you put on the table and what they put in their mouths. That includes toothpaste. Commercial toothpastes are loaded with ingredients you wouldn’t feed to your worst enemy, and they don’t belong in toothpaste either. Luckily, it’s cheap and easy to make a good, basic homemade baking soda toothpaste. The recipe below will work at least as well as a standard commercial toothpaste. You may already have all the ingredients in your pantry. Plus whipping up a batch will cost you a lot less than buying a tube of natural toothpaste at your local health food store.

Homemade Baking Soda Toothpaste

Total Time: 2 minutes (may take longer for coconut oil to liquefy)
Serves: 30

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2–4 tablespoons baking soda or a combination of baking soda and sea salt
  • Up to 1 tablespoon xylitol powder (optional)
  • 20 drops cinnamon or clove essential oil (optional)
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)
  • small glass jar

Directions:

  1. Place coconut oil container in a bowl of hot water to liquefy it (depending on your room temperature, this may take up to 15 minutes).
  2. Measure all ingredients into bowl and stir until completely blended.
  3. Store the finished product in a lidded glass jar.

Why So Blue?

Toothpaste doesn’t occur in Nature so there is no “right” color. But blue, red, and sparkles probably aren’t bringing much value in that commercial tube of toothpaste either! We have so much baking soda from our last economy bag that we just need an excuse to use some in homemade toothpaste. But baking soda needs some help so we like the cocao (any excuse!) and betonite clay. Not only are we feeling better about the ingredients and costs but like the results!

Imagine What We Could Do

A professor asked students how to advance sustainability in the present and post-doctorate. The student plans to promote it by integrating holistic nutrition, advancing Health 4.0, traditional medicine, and reducing food waste. Healthier lifestyles could decrease chronic illness costs, enabling investment in environmental clean-up and mental health, fostering face-to-face social interactions over online networks. Ultimately, the student envisions these changes enhancing spiritual wellbeing, satisfying basic human needs, and exemplifying stewardship for the planet.
